Developers didn’t just try AI tools. They replaced their entire workflow with them. Stack Overflow became the casualty.
But ChatGPT Didn’t Start This Fire
Stack Overflow’s traffic was already declining in mid-2021. ChatGPT launched November 2022.
The AI era didn’t ignite the fire. It poured gasoline on one already burning.
Pre-AI Decline Factors
Traffic drops started appearing consistently from early 2022, months before ChatGPT existed. Similarweb data shows the average monthly decline was around 6% throughout 2022.

ChatGPT does exactly the same thing. Just faster. It’s still copying and adapting existing patterns. Still giving you code that you adjust until it works.
The process is identical. The delivery mechanism changed.
Stack Overflow required you to:

Here’s where it gets interesting. ChatGPT accuracy is terrible.
A Purdue University study published in 2023 found that more than half of ChatGPT’s answers to software engineering questions were incorrect. The responses were more verbose than human-written answers, with differences in format, semantics, and syntax.
Yet developers use it anyway.
The 2025 Stack Overflow survey revealed that only 3.1% of developers highly trust AI output. Meanwhile, 46% of developers actively distrust AI accuracy, with 19.6% reporting they “highly distrust” it.

But Stack Overflow answers are also frequently outdated or wrong. The difference? When Stack Overflow gives you bad answers, it also makes you feel bad about asking.
ChatGPT gives you bad answers with a smile and an apology. Developers can live with that trade-off.
The Knowledge Paradox

Where Does Future Training Data Come From?
GPT-3.5 was trained on 570 GB of data including books, Wikipedia, web texts, articles, and yes, Stack Overflow answers.
The exact training set for GPT-4 hasn’t been publicly disclosed, but analysis suggests it included massive amounts of Stack Overflow content spanning 2008-2021.
Now Stack Overflow questions have dropped 76% since ChatGPT launched. December 2024 saw the lowest question volume since May 2009, according to Stack Exchange Data Explorer figures.
What happens when new problems stop getting documented publicly?
Mobile application development frameworks change constantly. New APIs, deprecations, breaking changes. iOS development and Android development both release major updates annually. Cross-platform app development tools like Flutter and React Native evolve monthly.
If nobody’s asking questions about these changes on Stack Overflow, where does the training data come from for future AI models?
The survey showed that 35% of developers report visiting Stack Overflow due to AI-related issues at least some of the time. Developers are encountering AI-generated bugs, then searching for human explanations.
But who’s writing those explanations? New questions aren’t getting answered. The 2025 survey revealed that reading and voting on comments ranks as developers’ top activity, while actually answering questions ranks much lower (Rank 6).
AI Models Will Stagnate Without Fresh Data
Reddit dealt with this exact problem. In 2023, they started charging for API access specifically because AI companies were training on their data for free.
Stack Overflow tried the opposite approach. They banned AI-generated answers in December 2022, citing accuracy concerns. Then in 2024, they pivoted completely and announced partnerships with Google, OpenAI, and GitHub.
They’re now selling the same data they tried to protect. Stack Overflow struck deals for their “knowledge licensing offering for businesses to build and improve AI tools and models,” according to their 2025 site documentation.
The irony is crushing. ChatGPT trained on Stack Overflow data, killed Stack Overflow traffic, and now Stack Overflow is licensing their declining dataset back to AI companies.
Meanwhile, the actual knowledge base isn’t being updated. The most upvoted answers remain from 2012-2016. Ancient by software development standards.
Junior Developers Losing Critical Skills

But using AI to learn back-end development or front-end development is fundamentally different from learning through community discussion.

The 2025 survey showed that technical documentation (68%) remains the top learning resource, followed by online resources (59%) and Stack Overflow (51%). All showing lower usage compared to the previous year.
Developers are moving away from learning resources entirely. Toward instant answers that require no learning at all.

The AI Ban That Backfired
December 2022: Stack Overflow banned AI-generated answers, citing accuracy concerns.
Purdue University research showed 52% of ChatGPT answers were incorrect. Stack Overflow’s ban seemed justified.
But developers didn’t stop using ChatGPT. They just stopped posting on Stack Overflow.

One Stack Overflow contributor with over 1 million reputation points confessed in 2024 to posting approximately 1,850 answers between March 2023 and April 2024, with about two-thirds based on generative AI content, according to DevClass reporting.

Too Late Pivot to AI
May 2024: Stack Overflow announced partnerships with both Google and OpenAI.
The company launched OverflowAI, integrating AI into their platform. After banning it for 18 months.
Stack Overflow will “utilize OpenAI models as part of their development of OverflowAI,” per the official announcement. OpenAI gets access to Stack Overflow’s OverflowAPI to improve model performance.
10% of Stack Overflow’s nearly 600 staff now focuses on AI strategy, CEO Prashanth Chandrasekar said in 2024.
Google Cloud partnership brought Gemini-powered features to the platform. OpenAI partnership delivered “high-quality technical content to strengthen the world’s most popular large language models.”
Both companies get Stack Overflow’s 15 years of community data. Stack Overflow gets AI features nobody asked for.
The first integrations went live by mid-2024. Question volume continued dropping.
Acquisition Timing Couldn’t Be Worse
June 2, 2021: Prosus acquired Stack Overflow for $1.8 billion.
One year before ChatGPT launched. Months before the traffic collapse began.
Prosus is the international arm of South Africa’s Naspers, which owns a massive stake in Tencent. They bought Stack Overflow to expand their EdTech portfolio alongside Codecademy, Brainly, and Udemy.
Co-founder Joel Spolsky announced the acquisition would “mint 61 new millionaires,” per The Register reporting.
At the time, Stack Overflow served 100 million monthly visitors and fielded a new question every 14 seconds, according to Prosus’s acquisition announcement.
The acquisition promised Stack Overflow would “continue to operate independently, with the exact same team in place,” Spolsky wrote. No major changes. No awkward “synergies.”
Then ChatGPT arrived 17 months later.
By late 2025, monthly question volume had returned to 2008 launch levels. Traffic down 14-50% depending on measurement methodology.
Prosus paid peak-bubble prices for a platform about to get disrupted by technology that didn’t exist yet. The timing was spectacularly bad.

We optimized ourselves into isolation. Now we’re debugging AI-generated code with no community to fall back on.
That’s the real cost nobody’s counting.
