However, if you have many years of experience, use your professional summary to highlight all of your contributions to your past employers. What did you manage to achieve during the period you were there? Were you there to only finish your shift, or were you trying to achieve higher milestones every time?
If you’re highlighting your accomplishments, this draws more attention since many applicants won’t always mention what they achieved, but only what tasks they completed. This is your chance to stand out from other applicants, especially if you are applying to a position that is highly competitive.
We are going to show you two good examples of a professional summary that stands out for both a junior web developer and a senior one.
Let’s start with the junior one:
Showing that you have worked in a boot camp structure for more than 1000 hours is impressive for a junior developer and makes you stand out in the eyes of a recruiter.
Now, it’s time to see an example from a senior web developer.
A perfect example of what a summary should look like for a senior web developer. You can see that the summary includes statistics, showing that the senior developer managed to increase online sales by 20% and reduce loading times by 30%.
List out your technical skills
Your technical expertise should have a separate section. Many web developer resumes that you see will usually have a long list of technical proficiencies. The problem is that while they try to include all of their tech skills, they’re not focused enough on delivering readability.
Always place yourself in a recruiter’s position and see how it would be easier to view a resume. Here’s a great example of which categories you should include when adding your technical skills to a resume:
- Web debug tools
- Scripts/UI
- Web frameworks and technologies
- ORM and Database
- Versioning and other tools
- Deployment tools
- Web Server/Application
What you add to these tech categories will depend on your skills. For example, if you know JavaScript, you can add that to the Scripts/UI category. Include your managerial skills
There are plenty of web developers who won’t include this heading and only focus on their professional experiences. Tech profiles do play a major role when it comes to being shortlisted, but the difference between being good and great in creating a web developer resume includes your managerial and leadership skills, and this is what bridges the gap.
Showing a sense of ownership and leadership shows how much of a high-value individual you are. Did you know that 77% of organizations claim that leadership is lacking on their team? This means that most modern-day organizations are looking for leaders. While many freelancers might be able to do what you do, not everyone can have managerial skills.
If you want to have a more clear idea of what kind of managerial skills you should include in your resume, here are some examples we came up with:
- Documentation & Reporting
- Team leadership
- Project management
- Module management
- Code optimization
- Agile Methodology
As we said before, when you mention your managerial skills, make sure to also include achievements. When it comes to non-technical skills, it’s best when you prioritize soft skills like communication and self-motivation. Why? All because they make you look so unique. For example, here is what you should say:
- Avoid saying you’re a leader, but show what teams you’ve led and what kind of departmental goals you managed to achieve
- Avoid saying you’re good at negotiating, but show what results your negotiation skills led to
- Avoid saying you are a project manager, but mention what kind of achievements you reached during the time you were managing those projects
The whole idea is to become more descriptive since everyone will only mention their skills, but never what they achieved with them.
Include your professional experience
This section is going to be one of the most important sections of your resume. The rule here is to be as simple as you can and only mention the experiences that matter.
For example, if you’ve been doing web development for 10 years, but changed jobs too frequently, it’s not the best idea to mention positions you only held for a very short period of time. This may raise concerns from the recruiter and look as if you can’t stay at a full-time job for too long.
Another rule to consider is to avoid mentioning internships if you’re a skilled web developer. Always mention professional experiences that matter the most, the ones you achieved the most and had the longest experiences in.
However, if you’re just getting your career started, it’s the other way around, and you should mention all of your experiences.
If you want to make your achievements stand out in this part, use the Princeton formula. The Princeton formula equals Action Verb + Project + Result = Accomplishment (APR = A). This formula clearly shows that you need to show the impact your achievement had on the organization.
Here’s a good example of the Princeton formula approach:
Managed a team of 10 Web Developers and successfully completed 6 projects, meeting deadlines, and reducing project costs by 15%.
If you compare this to writing a general statement like below:
Worked on several projects and managed to reduce project costs.
There’s a huge difference and this is what makes you stand out. You are including numbers, and clarifying what you did. Any applicant can be generic, but not all are willing to be specific, so this is your advantage.
To clarify everything for you, here’s a good example we found on the web from a custom-made CV with three professional experiences since 2015. This is good since it shows that the web developer wasn’t changing jobs too frequently. Simple to read, and engaging.
Refine your education section
This is an underrated part for many web developers, and while many may think that only your professional experience heading and projects should be your main focus, this isn’t necessarily true. Your education section shouldn’t be rushed.
To make everything more simple, we advise you to follow a conventional form that includes your degree, university, and graduation year. If you want to do something, do it right, and to make it easier for you, we’ll see you an example of how you can fill in your education section.
First, avoid only writing down your degree, university, and GPA. It looks plain and boring, and definitely won’t attract much attention.

- Wrote a research paper named ‘(you choose the name here on a research paper you did here)’ for the university’s magazine
- Developed a mobile app that was used for XYZ (mention what it was used for if you developed a mobile app) reasons
Of course, this was just an example and it’ll depend on what you did during your studies. It’s good to mention any awards or certifications you received.
Prior to your education heading, you can add a separate heading mentioning your certifications. Add where you acquired your certification, and what it helped you with. Considering that the online world has so many online courses available, acquiring certifications from a well-known online academy is always helpful. Here’s an example below that we got from a custom-made CV.
It’s easier to stand out than ever before
Now, there are so many options available for creating a resume that can stand out from other applicants. Anybody can write a resume that looks like the rest, but what makes you unique is the experiences you’ve been through, and that’s your advantage to make hiring managers reconsider you.
The whole idea here is to make sure you are including important information, following the rules of writing a proper resume for a web developer who is just getting started, and one who has many years of experience.
